At a day of interagency meetings for SIC co-ordinator Liz, the themes of social connections always come up again and again and again. This morning we talked about the good times the SIC students are having with Wanaka Retirement Village residents, playing games on a Monday afternoon –

“We didn’t have many people come on Monday so we decided to play 6-handed 500. Which was the first time I’d ever played with so many people. It made the game a lot more interesting as there was less chance of having a good set of cards to make a call with.”

On a Tuesday, students go walking with residents from Elmslie House – here’s Doreen visiting Derek.

It’s always a good time for intergenerational activities, especially since research that was highlighted to us at another interagency meeting today shows that social isolation is one of the top five human problems in our district.

It’s great to see so many of our students on the side of social connection, and to see this recognised at interagency meetings.
