Have a read below and see if you want to get involved behind the scenes at the Matariki celebrations this year – email me or come see me and let me know which bits you’re interested in –

So Matariki is on Saturday the 15th of June this year, with the food prep being held in the LWC kitchen on the Friday afternoon / evening before.

On the 14th, we have the kitchen booked from 2pm – 10pm. We can take up to 4 volunteers for the prep and I very much doubt it will go until 10. Last year we were done by around 8.

“Saturday the 15th:

“Set up from 10am – 2:30pm. Again, up to 4 to help would be great! Unloading the trucks / vans, setting up the tents, stage, fairy lights, workshop zones etc, etc, etc.

“Event from 2:30 – 7pm. As many as we can get please.
3 – 4:30: We will need people to assist with running workshops, including reading Maori stories in our story corner, overseeing the painting of our mural once again, helping out with logistics at the flax weaving workshops and keeping an eye on the chaos that is the hula hoops and pois that are strewn all over the place.

“4:30 – 6: We need people to help move barriers, serve the hangi, be ‘wardens’ at the barriers for the bonfires and the fire works and be on hand to help wherever is needed.

“6 – 7pm: Pack down. We want everyone. It’s cold, dark and rubbish. The more that help, the quicker we can get somewhere warm! Definitely a couple of strong people would be very, very helpful.”
